Nintendo’s Wii game console has what I would call a great feature. It has the ability to browse the Internet using a version of the opera web browser. There are wii portals popping up all over the place tailored to those surfing on their Nintendo.
There is however a number of individuals who feel this feature is of the negative variety. ThePornTalk.com, a site affiliated with a Californian Christian group, sees the wii’s ability to easily surf the net as a gateway to porn. /begin sarcasm/ This is of course the only use for a browser on the wii. /end sarcasm/ They offer a couple of suggestions to remedy this “problem”:
- Enable parental Controls with PIN access.
- Block access to the Browser (disable the feature).
Understanding the need to protect kids from certain aspects of the online world, why pick on just the wii? Surely this “warning” should include desktops, media centers, laptops, cell phones, PDAs, etc (basically anything that can access the web), but maybe that’s just going too far?
This issue has nothing to do with using a wii to access porn. Its unlikely you will stumble upon porn unless your looking for it (or related materials). If kids are actively seeking these materials, blocking browser access on a wii (or any other browsing method) is not going to stop them. Kids of the 21st century are very tech smart and will find a way around most road-blocks.
