Destroying the Battlefield Franchise

I have played the battlefield franchise games all the way back to Battlefield 1942 and was a hugh fan of the desert combat mod.  I played in tournaments for Battlefield Vietnam, Battlefield 2 and 2142 so I know my way around these games.  Recently BF2142 has a taken a turn for the worse.  Since the release of the game, it has been plagued with bugs, exploits and major outage issues.

I have personally had the following issues:

  1. I had to reinstall the game due to an invalid CD Key error after a software update.  I do have a valid copy and had been playing it for a couple of months when this happened. I tried everything other than a reinstall to get around this issue.  This sucks in itself but what makes it worse is that I purchased the game through EA’s download service, EA Link, and had to re-download the entire game.
  2. Punkbuster!  I understand the need to protect a game from cheaters.  If the cheaters had their way the game would certainly be unenjoyable to play.  However, when the means by which you protect the game seriously effect it, we have issues.  I have had problems with punkbuster kicking me for no known reason on a number of occasions.  I have had to fix/update/screw with punkbuster far too many times in order to get it to allow me to play the game.
  3. Server Disconnects!  This one just annoys me SO much.  The game is dependent on you connecting to the EA master server in order to track your stats and I asssume to make sure you are not cheating or doing something that EA does not like.  Again, this idea is a good one in theory, but if the master server is not allowing you to connect (which is very frequent…including as I write this story), you cannot play the game at all.

EA, get your heads out of your asses.  Quit taking the $50.00 up front and giving us nothing in return.  A game we can’t play unless your POS server says we can.  Am I asking too much?   I love the Battlefield franchise and I hate to see it destroyed through bad support and piss poor planning.

  1. Well I’ve stopped playing online gaming so long ago. I just played offline. Playing alone. Heheh just by myself. Not worrying about server lagging or stuff like that.

  2. I know what you mean but the BF games need to be played with others. It really has no decent single player element. It used to work fine back in the 1942 days…not anymore!

  3. Bleh, hear hear. I have ttwo copies of BF2, and they sit gathering dust as the servers crash, lag, die, on a regular basis. Ahoy, CS:S!
